An All-Rounder On The Field And Beyond

Prerana Sravan Kumar is not your everyday 16-year-old. The sprightly Bengaluru girl has made India proud at the international stage by winning a medal in the coveted Hong Kong Asian Youth Triathlon Championship.

The talented athlete first stole the limelight winning the gold in the BMF Triathlon Sprint Distance Triathlon in 2021 before she made the big splash next year, bagging the gold in the Kolhapur Bergman Sprint Distance Triathlon event in open category. The Karnataka star who has won gold twice is also a champion cyclist, and her moves have catapulted her into the elite list of Karnataka athletes making their mark in national and international athletics championships.

“I first made my mark in cycling and running before I took up swimming and after attaining the required level in swimming, I started to parade my skills in the state Triathlon meets before I graduated to compete on the national circuit,” said Prerana, adding that she trains with her father Sravan Kumar who is also an athlete.

Producing a series of medal winning efforts last year, Prerana won the 3000M gold and a silver in 1500M in the School Games Federation Of India (SGFI) regional athletic championship in September and two months later, she won the 1500 metre gold and a silver in 3000M in the SGFI National championship.

Spurred by the success, Prerana produced another top-draw effort in the National Circuit ITF ranking Triathlon event in Udaipur, finishing second in the junior category. Prerana’s sublime effort was lauded by champions in athletic circles.

“Before my first international meet in Hong Kong, my swimming coaches Lokesh and Sharath at the Netkallappa Aquatic centre in Padmanabhanagar left no stone unturned in their effort to help me,” said Prerana, pointing out that her school management have played a stellar role in her success story.

A student of Clarence Public School, JP Nagar, Prerana is good at her academics and her principal Nimmi George disclosed that she was one of the good students who perform creditably in academics and sports and this quality separates her from the rest.

Prerana made it clear that she will strive to maintain her winning streak this year. “I will keep performing at the highest level to log points and achieve ranking to gain passage to international events and that is the first goal,” said Prerana.
